I’m not sure what it is about me, but I have always attracted these folks (the same way strangers will tell me their life story while waiting in the grocery store line). Loved, loved, LOVED your story about the deaf man! Ever since I was in middle school (I’m 59 now), I’ve had a number of “special” people come into my life people who have a mental, and sometimes a physical “disability”.

So with the power of kindness in mind, here are some of my favorite quotes from our blog archive that I often re-read just to remind myself to treat people a little better than necessary: This was my most recent “in your face” reality check proving that the way we treat people makes a big difference in this world.

I bet your voice is as beautiful as your personality.” Even though I’ve been in need, I’ve been too afraid to come here for past few days. Thank you for being patient and accepting of my disability. “You are so incredibly kind and beautiful, inside and out.

After exchanging notes back and forth several times, so I could place his customized food order, his final note to me read: He looked nervous and immediately handed me a note letting me know that he was unable to hear and that he also had health conditions requiring him to eat low sodium foods. This morning a deaf man came into the soup kitchen where Marc and I volunteer our time. This is being stupid and ignoring reality on purpose.“Do your little bit of good where you are it’s those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.” “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” ― Edmund Burkeįeatured Photo by Jen Theodore on Unsplash Letting it go unchallenged just makes all the worse stuff seem less extreme. Look at the capitalization in the meme, for fuck’s sake.īecause discrimination thrives when it is allowed to exist and when small injustices and racist acts are unremarkable. But that also means they might try – like so many right-wing Christians do in the US – to falsely claim discrimination whenever they don’t get their way.īut more likely, they’re trying to minimize the identity of LGBTQI+ people by implying that identity is equivalent to a vague (and factually incorrect) sense of “southern heritage”. It makes it a lot easier to avoid having a Nazi (or racist) at the table. It is nice that some people are unequivocally self-identifying as racists. This sets up a false equivalence, which does two shady things.Įspecially important after the recent Supreme Court ruling, it claims that racism and white supremacy is that person’s identity in the same way that LGBTQIA+ are identities. But let’s cut to why it’s really worth responding to. So the whole “logic” of these meme is utter and complete horseshit. Perhaps some folks should learn what the amendment before the gun one says. Other examples of private property? NASCAR tracks and NFL stadiums. It’s private property, and I get to decide that. But the moment he wants to fly it on my property, there’s a problem. Like it’s the right of a guy who lives two blocks from me to fly it… In his yard. It has always been your right to fly whatever flag you want on your property. If I started waving around a dildo and said that meant “Jesus” to me, well… I probably wouldn’t replace your preacher anytime soon. You might hear someone say “But the Stars and Bars means Southern Heritage to me”.Hell, look at the featured photo! Those re-enactors aren’t even using the “Stars and Bars”. If you’re going to claim an interest in history and heritage, then maybe get the right fucking flag. The ‘”Stars and Bars” is the wrong damn flag. Read about that here or here, or hell, just look at the meme at the bottom of this post to get the point. The “Stars and Bars” is not about heritage at all.Partially, I want to talk about it because there’s so many things wrong about it, and by doing so, I’ll save you the time and energy of having to write something like this yourself.īut more importantly, I want to talk about it because it works to normalize bigoted beliefs, and you might not even notice. Particularly this offensive one to the right.
